Doctor J's Guide to Bollywood Music If you've seen the movie 'Ghost World', then you were no doubt blown away by the opening scene of Thora Birch watching a crazy Indian movie with a wild dance number. That movie is 'Gumnaam', and the song featured is "Jan Pehachaan Ho', sung by Mohamed Rafi. This led me on a quest to find more of this exciting Bollywood exotica, and now, because I'm such a great guy, I'm sharing these exciting discoveries with you! What follows below is by no means a comprehensive list of movies and music, but just some of the stuff that I've managed to dig up. All contributions welcome, so here they are, in no particular order. I'll try and post one new movie each week, but no promises... You can contact me by email here, if you wish to contribute, just put 'Bollywood' in the subject heading, so it doesn't go to the spam filter. NOW POSTED ON YOU TUBE. PART ONE OF MY 'BOLLYWOOD A GO GO' COLLECTION. PARTS TWO TO SIX YET TO COME, BUT YOU CAN SEE PART ONE BELOW... |

APRADH Still to Come.... PURAB AUR PACHHIM FAKIRA HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA
CHARAS JUGNU PHOOL AUR PATTHAR DON
BULLET WARRANT APNA DESH SHOLAY JOHNY MERA NAAM and more... OTHER NOTES... BAARAAT (1973), composer RD Burman. This entire soundtrack is considered the best of the genre, and this track is definitely my favourite. Incredible singing from Asha Bhosle. Medley of Aa Dil Kya Mahfil Hai, Tum Kya Jano and Mil Gaya Humko Saathi, all from the film HUM KISISE KUM NAHEEN (1977), again by RD Burman. All the above tracks are on a $10 CD called The Golden Collection: Rahul Dev Burman. Cheap!!! Jan Pehechaan Ho, from the film GUMNAAM (1965) sung by Mohamed Rafi, composed by Shankar Jaikishan (so far I've only found this on the Ghost World soundtrack)
Dum Maro Dum, from the film HARE RAMA, HARE KRISHNA (1973), sung by Asha Bhosle, composed by RD Burman. Possibly also 'Dance Music' off this same album, although I haven't heard it myself. English titled 'I Love You' is a sweet, lounge-style track (well recommended). Recommended ALBUMS, but not heard completely yet are: DHARMATMA (1975) - by Kalyanji Anandji. Samples of this I've heard sound incredible, funky with crazy vocals. SHOLAY (1975) - RD Burman (soundtrack to most popular Hindi film ever, Burman's personal homage to Ennio Morricone) JEWEL THIEF (1967) - SD Burman (burman senior was a hot composer too, this his most consistant score - with a bit of help from RD)
These are the songs that I recommend, with thanks to Niall Richardson from Bollywood LP site. Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyar Tera from the film: TEESRI MANZIL (1966), composer RD Burman Aao Twist Karen from the film: BHOOT BANGLA (1965), composer RD Burman Leka Hum Diwana Dil from the film YAADON KI |
